Established in 1970, Earth Day is an annual celebration that honours the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness of the need to protect Earths natural resources.
Over 1 billion people take action each year but sadly not all actions have the same impact. Businesses are one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gasses worldwide so changes at a business scale have huge potential.
Business leaders are increasingly realizing the power of sustainable business strategies which equally consider people, planet & profit and businesses that invest early are already seeing gains and are on track for prosperity.
Is your business focused on just the bottom line, or are your leaders taking a broader approach?
Watch the video below for more information about how the triple bottom line approach works and why businesses should consider monitoring performance in this way.
How your business could get involved with Earth Day
As a well known, long-standing international awareness day, Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to take action and celebrate your commitment to the creating a healthier planet. Why not consider one of our suggestions below?
Use your purchasing power to invest in the environment
Is your electricity tariff 100% renewable? Could you move away from maintenance contracts that use pesticides, or work with cleaners who produce less waste? Take some time to consider what changes your business could make, even one small act makes a positive difference.
Host a work event
Organise a lunchtime leaning event which celebrates your sustainability achievements to date, raises awareness about certain issues or innovations and generates ideas from your workforce. Alternatively why not arrange a clean-up of your site and the areas around it? Speak to your local authority team about use of litter picking equipment and support with waste disposal.
Develop an in-house Green Team
Run an internal campaign recruiting volunteers for a Green Team; a dedicated group of staff who can drive forward behaviour change campaigns in your business. Behaviour changes such as switching off lights and devices have been known to reduce energy consumption by 5% – if we all were able to get these initiatives off the ground imagine the positive impact we could have on our planet!
