Set a Net Zero target but haven’t calculated our carbon footprint

We don’t want to scare you but you may be in troubled waters here…

Setting a Net Zero target without understanding your current emissions, where they come from and what is required to reduce them, may result in you falling short of your target date or require you to invest a lot more than you bargained for.

It’s essential you calculate your emissions and then plot out an accurate pathway to Net Zero from there. The steps should be as follows:

  • Calculate your emissions to produce a baseline carbon footprint for your organisation.
  • Map out and evaluate GHG emissions across your organisation’s value chain and establish high impact areas to prioritise within your net zero plan.
  • Investigate a range of carbon reduction actions (with estimated costs and carbon savings) -outlining the quick wins, short and mid-term actions as well as longer term options.
  • Establish which of these are appropriate or feasible for your organisation.
  • Use these potential carbon reduction actions to establish a decarbonisation plan and map out your Pathway to Net Zero.

Our two-part series shows you how to effectively capture data, convert it into carbon emissions, and identify hot spots to reduce your organisation’s carbon footprint. Click on the links below to get started with your carbon footprint:
