The Directory of Social Change hosted their second Going Green conference on the 21st March 2024 driving forward their ambition to create a sustainable charity sector.
The conference brought together charity leaders and senior decision-makers to discuss what can be done to become more sustainable, how to go about it and how the sector can embed sustainability within organisational culture.
Groundwork were invited to speak at the conference, with our Senior Sustainability Consultant Amy Coulter leading a session on ‘How to write an environmental policy’.
Amy’s session included:
- What is an Environment Policy?
- Why do you need one?
- How to create a policy
- Do’s & Don’ts
- Sustainable procurement
- Travel policies
Amy concluded with how charities could go beyond the policy, introducing people to Carbon Literacy training, Carbon Footprinting and Environmental Management Systems options.
Over 60 charities joined the conference to help progress their sustainability journey, Amy commented:
Working as a sustainability consultant within a charity, I’ve experienced the challenges of knowing what needs to be done but not having access to the resources to make it happen immediately. We’ve guided the Senior Leadership team at Groundwork through the sustainability process and we now have robust environmental policies, environmental management systems and carbon reduction plans in place. I hope that I have inspired other charities to start their journey and feel empowered that they can make positive change.
