Saltsel achieves silver Sustainable Business Membership award

SaltSep recognised with silver award for sustainability progress

Salt Separation Services (SaltSep) specialises in the design and manufacture of Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment systems used in Defence, Oil & Gas, Cruise, and Industrial applications. Based in Rochdale, SaltSep has recently achieved the Silver Award through Groundwork’s Sustainable Business Membership (SBM).

The Sustainable Business Membership assessment empowers organisations to embed sustainability into their operations and achieve measurable environmental and social impact. Members receive a tailored sustainability action plan and assessment report, and an official SBM logo and certificate, along with help and support to make improvements.

The SBM assessment looks at five core areas:

  1. Environmental Impact
  2. Social Responsibility
  3. Stakeholder Engagement
  4. Operational Efficiency
  5. Governance

SaltSep’s Silver award recognises the actions that have been taken across the five core areas of their business operations, and they scored particularly highly in relation to their Governance and Stakeholder Engagement.

The award credits the company’s strong Aspects & Impacts Register, SMART Environmental Goals, and their ESG report. In addition, all processes and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have now been reviewed and updated across the company to embed environmental considerations into everyday business practices. By improving the ESG elements of their procurement activities, they also facilitate a more resilient and sustainable supply chain. Importantly, they have shared and continue to share these improvements with both their staff and external stakeholders.

Next Steps

SaltSep’s SBM report and action plan also include recommendations to consider going forwards, such as achieving ISO 14001 certification, adding their sustainability goals to their website, and arranging an energy audit of their premises to identify how to further improve energy efficiency and integrate low carbon technologies.

Other recommendations include monitoring more of their Scope 3 categories, such as staff commuting, water, and the mileage of the deliveries to and from site, as well as exploring how SaltSep can support other community and/or environmental initiatives.
