How IEMA’s Pathways to Net Zero Course Is Empowering Sustainability Professionals

With the urgency of the climate crisis intensifying, organisations across every sector are recognising the need to step up. But for many professionals, the question remains: how do we move from ambition to action? That’s where IEMA’s Pathways to Net Zero course comes in.

In this blog, we hear from some past participants about how the course was a real game-changer when it came to taking action on sustainability.

The Pathways to Net Zero course is a practical, hands-on programme designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and confidence to lead real change. Whether you’re new to sustainability or looking to formalise your existing knowledge, the course breaks down the complex journey to Net Zero into clear, achievable steps.

Before I came on the programme, I has no understanding of Net Zero whatsoever.

In a short span, participants go from curious learners to confident advocates. Many cite the balance of theory and application as key to their transformation.

I’ve got a little bit of learning now to be able to encourage people to come on side. So, when I’m talking about replacing boilers, I’ve now got the proof that getting rid of gas is a good thing to do.

Others highlight the relevance across industries. From manufacturing and engineering to finance and construction, the course content is universally applicable, making it a great fit for diverse roles.

The Net Zero programme was crucial for us because it gave us that first stepping stone. We’ve gained everything from how to make a small difference on the purchasing of electricity, to developing the culture in our organisation.

Beyond technical know-how, participants say the course fosters a mindset shift. It empowers people to think systemically, ask critical questions, and drive sustainable change within their teams.

We’ve now put a Sustainability Champion in place, which is really good as she’s a Director and she’s got a real passion for sustainability.
