Background
St Luke’s Hospice is a palliative care facility located in Winsford, Cheshire.
Their premises comprise of an original brick building which is over 100 years old, plus an extension that is roughly 30 years old.
In 2020 Groundwork’s Sustainable Business Consultants conducted an energy audit at St Luke’s Hospice through the Business Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP). Consultants provided suggestions on how St Luke’s Hospice could increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions and supported them with grant applications.
Since then St Luke’s Hospice have made several investments across all three recommended areas. They have:
- Installed LED lighting, replacing lamps throughout the building premises
- Added thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) across all the heaters which previously lacked the ability to control heating levels
- Modified their hot water systems
Sustainability Consultant Navin Raj Venkatraman recently revisited the site to conduct an energy audit to see what impact these measures have had on energy efficiency, and to make suggestions for the future.
Results
In just one year St Luke’s Hospice saved over £7,000 and reduced their carbon output by nearly 18tCOe2 due to the energy efficiency measures installed.
Next steps
To further improve their efficiency Navin suggested two options to investment:
- Investing in PIR lighting sensors so that lighting doesn’t have to run 24 hours per day.
- Investing in a smart meter so their employees can be more aware of the heating schedule and how their behaviours impact usage and bills.
